Between 1990 and 2007, SDSU was awarded a center to serve 25 Region IX students (Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico; American Samoa, Guam, Palau and Federal States of Micronesia and U.S. Commonwealth of Puerto Rico) and 25 local San Diego students for an intensive summer program. The summer component had a balanced core curriculum (for entering 11th and 12th graders) of several levels of math, writing, and reading combined with courses that begin to simulate college work in the sciences—botany, physical science, environmental ecology and molecular biology—as well as computer applications to math/science problems. Students also participated in workshops in career exploration and adolescent issues. All students participated in major research projects based on their science or math focus. Co-curricular workshops, career activities, evening tutorials, and scientific field trips supplemented the courses.

Purpose
  • To provide services to students who are either low-income or first generation in their family to pursue a college education.
  • To create a harmonious, multicultural, educational community of students with high potential who demonstrate a strong desire to acquire higher education.
  • To enhance all areas of current high school study by providing superior summer classes.
  • To give participants personalized college preparation and counseling.
  • To inspire and instruct qualified students in specific areas of math, science and technology.
Statement of Philosophy
The Upward Bound Math/Science pre-college program strived to create a harmonious, multicultural, educational community of students with high potential who demonstrate a strong desire to acquire higher education. This educational community promoted, for both students and staff, a sense of belonging, self-pride, and an ethos of personal responsibility with a deep commitment to give back to the larger community. The educational community provided curriculum opportunities for academic accomplishment, self-governance, individual and group empowerment, as well as personal and cultural growth.
